| | Learn To Use Perspex Templates with Meredithe Clark (39-Minute DVD) Victoria Stars
Finished size: 127cm x 127cm (50in x 50in)
Finished block size: 20cm (8in)
Squares, rectangles and right-angle triangles are easily cut with a rotary cutter, ruler and mat but when the shape you want is not standard, for example, an elongated triangle, what do you do? Templates can be made from template plastic but they are not always accurate, are difficult to use with a rotary cutter and are damaged easily. The templates used by Meredithe Clark to cut the pieces for her Victoria Stars quilt are made from the same material as patchwork rulers and, being the same depth as a ruler, can be used with a rotary cutter. They are transparent, so they are ideal for fussy cutting and have holes for matching pieces or marking seam junctions. These templates work particularly well with a 28mm rotary cutter and a rotating mat. Templates for this project are also provided on the Pattern Sheet. Inspiration for Meredithe’s quilt design came from an antique quilt in Mary Elizabeth Johnson’s Star Quilts.

| | Getting Colour-Confident With Kathy Doughty & Sarah Fielke (56-Minute DVD) Brighton Rock - Finished size: 138cm x 124cm (55in x 491/2in)
Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke designed this project especially for Quilters Companion readers and viewers of our DVDs. Kathy and Sarah explain, “The objective of this project was to make a quilt that used colour as a technique, as well as a ruler as a template. When colour is the story, the fi rst thing that comes to mind is the Kaffe Fassett range of fabrics. The fabrics are alive with rich, saturated colours that set a palette or recipe for the quilt. In addition to the colours, we decided to use a ruler as the base of the project. We chose the Creative Grids 60-Degree ruler.
“This ruler has several shapes based on the 60-degree angle including a triangle, a half triangle of this shape, a diamond and a half diamond. The varied shapes form a hexagon or the fl at sides that allow us to square up the quilt. To use the rulers we simply established the size of the blocks we wanted, cut strips to the width of the triangles and cross cut using the angled sides of the triangles. The angles are the same so all sides are easily sewn together and with simple planning the dreaded inset seam can be avoided.”
