Beading Projects

Celebrity Copycat

Who says we can’t live like the rich and famous?

WE TAKE A LOOK at what jewellery designs celebrities are choosing to accessorise with — and then copy them! In issue 3.5 of Australian Beading, Wishware Beads designer Louise Jensen recreates a necklace worn to this year’s TV Logies awards by Packed to the Rafters and Dancing With The Stars contestant Jessica McNamee, and we also copy the style of the always funky TV presenter Ruby Rose.

To make Jessica’s Logies necklace

Materials

2 4cm lengths of fine silver-plated chain

1 silver-plated and clear crystal flower hook and eye clasp

4m 22-gauge non-tarnish silver wire

2 8mm silver-plated twisted jump rings

66 6x3mm French rose copper fire-polished donuts

34 8mm clear AB fire-polished rounds

68 6mm clear AB fire-polished rounds

49 6x3mm aquamarine copper fire-polished donuts

56 12x9mm teal fire-polished Czech glass ovals

Tools

Chain-nose pliers

Round-nose pliers

Wire cutters

Hypo Cement glue

Step 1

Cut three 1m lengths 22-gauge wire. Wire wrap one end of each length of wire onto one twisted jump ring. Trim each wire tail. Onto one length of wire thread 16 French rose fire-polished donuts. Onto the next strand thread eight 8mm clear AB fire-polished rounds.

Step 2

Twist the first strand around the second strand and then thread, onto the first strand, 14 French rose fire-polished donuts, 32 clear AB 6mm fire-polished rounds and 45 aquamarine copper fire-polished donuts.

Step 3

Onto the second strand thread 26 8mm clear AB fire-polished rounds and 18 teal fire-polished ovals. Onto the third strand thread 36 clear AB 6mm fire-polished rounds and 24 teal fire-polished donuts.

Step 4

Weave or, in a freeform manner, twist together all three strands. At the three wire ends, use your chain-nose pliers to make a loop on each wire, thread on the remaining jump ring and then create a small wire-wrapped loop to finish. Trim each wire tail.

Step 5

Cut a 50cm length of 22-gauge wire and wire wrap onto one end-twisted jump ring. Trim the wire tail. Thread on 36 French rose fire-polished donuts, making a wire wrap onto the third wire (from Step 3) after the 15th bead, before continuing to add the remainder of the 36 beads. Now thread on 14 teal fire-polished ovals. Wrap this strand around your previous three strands, wrapping along the full length of your work until you reach the second jump ring. Now wire wrap your wire end onto this and then trim the wire tail.

Step 6

Cut a 5cm length of wire and wire wrap this onto one end jump ring. Trim the wire tail. Onto this short length of wire thread one aqua fire-polished donut and then wire wrap onto the last link of one end of a 4cm length of chain. Then wire wrap another aqua fire-polished donut onto the other end of the same piece of chain, attaching one half of your clasp piece before completing your second wire-wrapped loop. Repeat this step for other side of your necklace, adding the remaining half of your clasp.

TIP: You may want to apply a small dab of Hypo Cement glue to your wire coils to fully secure them.

Kits for this project are priced at $98 and are available from Wishware Beads via the website at www.wishwarebeads.com.au or email info@wishwarebeads.com.au Designer Louise Jensen also has a fantastic blog — check it out at www.beadblog.com.au

2 8mm black diamond Swarovski bicones

20cm nickel-plated crimped chain

3m 22-gauge non-tarnish silver wire

Tools

Chain-nose pliers

Round-nose pliers

wire cutters

Step 1

Cut the 20cm of nickel chain into four 5cm lengths. Cut your wire into approximately 12cm lengths — these will be used for wire wrapping each of your beads.

Step 2

Wire wrap one cinnabar diamond, threading on one end link of two 5cm chain links before completing one of your wire-wrapped ends.

Step 3

Now link and wire wrap one 12x9mm black diamond fire-polished oval onto the remaining loop of your wire-wrapped cinnabar diamond from Step 2. Before completing the second wire-wrapped loop, thread on one jet black ring and then complete the wrapped loop.

Step 4

Link and wire wrap one crystal cube onto the jet black ring from Step 3. Now wire wrap one cinnabar heart onto the second loop of your wire-wrapped cube. Before completing the second loop of your wire-wrapped heart, thread on one silver oval connector loop.

Step 5

Link and wire wrap one 12x9mm jet fire-polished oval onto the remaining loop of the silver connector from Step 4. Before completing the second loop of your wire wrap, thread on one loop of one antique-silver flower connector.

Step 6

Link and wire wrap one 6mm silver bicone to the remaining loop of your flower connector from Step 5. Now link and wire wrap one 12x9mm smooth oval and one cube in the same manner.

Step 7

Link and wire wrap one cinnabar heart to the remaining loop of the crystal cube from Step 6. Before completing the second wire-wrapped loop of your heart bead, thread on one jet glass ring.

Step 8

Wire wrap one silver-shade donut, threading on the jet glass ring from Step 7 before completing your wire wrap.

Step 9

Link and wire wrap one black diamond twist to the remaining loop of your donut from Step 8. Before completing the second wire-wrapped loop of this twist bead, thread on two end links of your remaining 5cm lengths of chain.

Step 10

Link and wire wrap one 12x9 black diamond fire-polished crystal, threading on the opposite ends links of the 5cm lengths of chain from Step 9. Link and wire wrap one 12x9mm jet black fire-polished crystal to your black diamond crystal. Then link and wire wrap one silver bicone, threading on the loop of one silver connector before completing your second wire-wrapped loop.

Step 11

Link and wire wrap one 8mm black diamond bicone, threading on one jet glass ring before completing your second wire-wrapped loop. Now link one cinnabar diamond bead, taking your wire through the same jet glass ring before completing your wire wrap.

Step 12

Now link and wire wrap one 12x9mm smooth oval, one 14mm jet cosmic crystal, one 8mm black diamond bicone, one black diamond twist and one 12x9 jet black fire-polished oval, threading on a loop of one antique-silver flower connector before completing the final wire-wrapped loop of your jet black fire-polished oval.

Step 13

Link and wire wrap one 15mm fire-polished round to the remaining loop of the flower connector added in Step 12. Link and wire wrap one silver bicone and thread on one loop of a silver oval connector before completing the second wire-wrapped loop of your silver bicone.

Step 14

Link and wire wrap one 12x9mm smooth oval. Link and wire wrap one 12x9mm jet black fire-polished oval, threading on one jet glass ring before completing the second wire-wrapped loop of your jet black oval.

Step 15

Wire wrap one silver-shade donut, threading on the jet glass ring from Step 14 before completing your first wire-wrapped loop and then threading on the remaining end links of your 5cm chain lengths from Step 2 to complete your necklace.
